Many times when I am editing, I find that translators struggle with obstetric formulas. I know they might look scary and confusing at first, but once you understand them, it’s very straightforward.
🤓 Let’s see:
There’re different systems to record the number of previous pregnancies and pregnancies carried to viable age, such as GPA and TPAL.
▶ GPA is the abbreviation for G: gravida or gravidity (number of pregnancies), P: para or parity (number of births of viable offspring), A or Ab: abortus (here it’s advisable to use abortus over abortion or miscarriage).
▶ TPAL breaks down as follows: T refers to term births (after 37 weeks of gestation), P refers to premature births, A refers to abortions, and L refers to living children or live fetuses.
Often, you can also find the letter C, which stands for C-sections.
